Aimee Lou Wood on ‘SNL’ White POTUS Sketch: ‘I Know for A Fact A Man Wrote That’

And she didn’t tell Walton Goggins not to host ‘SNL’
Aimee Lou Wood on ‘SNL’ White POTUS Sketch: ‘I Know for A Fact A Man Wrote That’

Aimee Lou Wood is still answering questions about that SNL sketch that ridiculed her smile. Sarah Sherman did a Wood impression in a White Lotus parody, sporting an enormous pair of buck teeth that exaggerated the actor’s appearance. “I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny,” Sherman sent flowers, and everyone seemed ready to move on.

That didn’t stop  Walton Goggins. To be fair, the interview was conducted a week before Goggins hosted SNL and only a week after Wood had made her complaints public. At that very specific moment in Saturday Night Live history, rumors whispered that she’d asked Goggins to step down from his hosting duties.

“I was so upset when people (said that),” Wood responded. “For fuck’s sake, of course Walton should do SNL. That’s got nothing to do with me. He’s fucking had a career for, like, how long?”

“Seventy years,” Goggins joked.

Wood recalled that almost immediately after her critical social media post, the reaction was, “Aimee caught crying over SNL skit.”

“I was not crying over the SNL skit,” she corrected. “I was over it the minute I said it.”

Still, she doesn’t regret being honest about her reaction. “This is an important moment for me, because what I would usually do is see it and turn the anger inward,” she confessed. “I thought, I’m just gonna say it, so I don’t spiral.”

Goggins affirmed the decision. “That’s self-love.”

“I know for a fact a man wrote that. It wasn’t Sarah Sherman, don’t hate on her,” Wood said. “I didn’t like the concept. Take the piss out of me. Do the teeth! I’ve got the teeth, but, like—”

Goggins interrupted to compliment, “The most beautiful smile in the world.”

“Thank you,” Wood continued. “The punch line should not be how I look. That’s what bothered me. Do the caricature, because that’s what SNL is. It felt misogynistic. It felt like the punch line was a woman’s appearance, which is just not funny. It’s not cool.”

Speaking of teeth, Goggins told Variety that another story about his alleged feud with Wood was untrue. He shut down an interview with a reporter from The Times of London after he was asked about the rumored rift and whether or not he and Wood had bonded over their choppers. (At one point, Goggins told the reporter, “I leave it to other people to talk about hairlines or my big f***ing teeth.”)

“What he was insinuating, it was so disgusting,” Goggins said. “It was so appalling. I was flabbergasted. And I said, ‘Fuck mate, wow. I think we’re done here.’”
